... ...Learning SpaceAbout learning space

We have developed the concept of learning space to describe the creation of whole learning environments which take account of:

  • Social and emotional space: learning as a social process, giving attention to group dynamics, safety, trust, support, and emotional needs.
  • Cognitive space: respecting, valuing and working with the different intelligences (Gardner), learning styles (Honey and Mumford) and cultural and cognitive diversity.
  • Physical space: the type, size, quality and organisation of learning spaces, and the movement and activities of people within their physical environment.

Learning can be characterised as nature’s expression of the search for development. In a whole systems view of the world, both individual and organisational learning can be understood as the process of adaptation of a complex living system in interaction with its environment.
Consideration of the whole person in his or her whole environment is essential to the creation of optimum conditions for learning.

learning-space is about trying to make sense of the complex interrelationships affecting individuals, organisations and their learning environments, and seeking practical and appropriate responses to maximise the potential for learning.
